Waking from a Deep Sleep

By: Sapphire

For the first time in months I feel the breeze

I am startled by bright sunshine

And soothed by gentle drizzle

I notice the moon slung in the sky

Like a glowing hammock

And the stars blinking down on me

Like tiny distant fires

When I wake up

I hear the songs of the morning:

The twittering of the birds and schoolchildren

The far-off hoots of impatient motorists

And the sighs of the trees as a fresh wind stirs them

Quite suddenly during a day

I become conscious of the beauty of a friend

The kindness of a stranger

The laughter of an old, poor man

With so much to cry about

I begin to see colour again

Remember why I used to watch the sun set

Feel the blood pumping through my veins

As I dance like I finally mean it

And I begin to wake up from the deep sleep my sadness put me in

And realize more fully than ever before

I am alive.
