Megatron and the Songfic

By: Miss Special

Note: I'm not really picking on songfics, I'm just venting my mild frustration, which will probably be described in an afternote.

"More than a Feeling" (by Boston) is being used solely because I could find chord progressions for it. (Obtained at harmony-central.com.)

Sorry, I can't really find a way to include a red bouncing ball, so you'll just have to imagine it.

Again, not really picking on songfics, other than that, take it as you will.

Megatron was sitting in his bathtub, enjoying a few moments of peace while his minions busied themselves with things other than bothering him.

He idly watched the chemicals swirl around him, his rubber ducky quietly floating on the surface.

He didn't notice at first, but the viewscreen overlooking the tub activated, remained blank for a moment, and, as it caught his attention, words scrolled across the screen.

I looked out this morning and the sun was gone
Turned on some music to start my day
I lost myself in a familiar song
I closed my eyes and I slipped away

"…What the pit is this?!" Megatron demanded aloud, standing up and disrupting the ducky and swirls. He looked around, thinking it might be some sort of prank, but there wasn't a snickering Predacon within hearing range. Indeed, the entire base seemed quiet as the proverbial grave.

He looked back to the screen, which was still displaying lines of text.

It's more than a feeling, when I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling)
I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)
'till I see Marianne walk away
I see my Marianne walkin' away

It seemed benign enough. But…

"Poetry?" Megatron asked the viewscreen and its silent text. No, poetry didn't seem like the right way to describe it…

"A song," he decided. "But for what purpose? Just the lyrics alone do not convey the entire song, noo."

The viewscreen paused. The text changed, then resumed scrolling.

[G] [D/F#] [Em7] [D]

So many people have come and gone,

Their faces fade as the years go by;

Yet I still recall as I wander on, as clear as the sun

In the summer sky

"An improvement, yes." Megatron nodded. "But not enough. The chords are indicative of the notes, but not the rhythm."

The screen continued scrolling unhelpfully.

It's [G]more than a [C]feeling [Em](more than a feeli[D]ng)

When I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling)

And I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)

'Till I [G]see Marianne [C]walk a-[Eb]way,

[Em7]I see m[Asus4]y Maria[A]nne [A2]walk[A]ing away.

Getting fed up with the whole thing, Megatron said in an exasperated tone, "What about one of those vile bouncing balls? From the human children's sing-alongs?"

The screen paused again, and then a red ball bounced its way down the lyrics.

[G] [D/F#] [Em7] [D]

When I'm tired and thinking cold,

I hide in my music, forget the day and

Dream of a girl I used to know

I closed my eyes and she slipped away

She slipped away. She slipped away.

Megatron watched, and then shook his head.

"Vague sound and rhythm has been achieved, but without hearing the song itself, or at least seeing the sheet music, it still lacks the full impact!"

The screen scrolled, apparently ignoring him.

As Megatron disconnected the powercord from the viewscreen, he grumbled, "And who in the Inferno is Marianne?"

Miffed at the experience, but otherwise no worse for the wear, Megatron returned to his chemical bath.

Afternote: My frustration with songfics lies in the fact that the lyrics are only part of the song, and that they leave out a lot of the feeling and emotion a song creates. And you can't turn a guitar solo into words. It's all about the guitar solos. :D
