Laptop slowly dying...

Unread post by Jagna »

I've bee having problems with it, but name me one person whose faithful lap companion of 2 and a half years hasn't had he occasional hicough.

For example, he headphones don't work. Actually, they're selective on when they work when they don't. Sometimes they work but the mic doesn't. For quite a while, neither have worked at the same time. Not great for Skype.

But alas, Larry is dying. Yes, my laptop's name is Larry :P The speakers aren't working AT ALL now. They were fine this morning. I put the master volume on mute while my roommate was talking to her parents (fyi, I've moved into a brand new flt! Woohoo! It's gorgeous, but I digress...), and Larry has been silent since. Ive done your bogstandard on/off, resart, systems check, even pulled out the battery and checked nothing on the bottom was falling off.

I'm rather annoyed and quite upset. Not just because I wa working on a nifty DVD thingy when I realised, but also because I've stuck with this od thing since I got it, even refused a trade wth my mum's new (back then) Vista laptop. P.s. thank god, I loathe Vista!

Does anyone have any inkling as to what it might be? I'm quite tech savy and a good problem solver, but this has me a little stumped. Taking into a shop is a last resort because A- it's quite expensive in England and B- admittedly, I have a few *coughillegalcough* programmes from Kuwait that the might sneer at. Sure, I can take them off, put them on a hard drive and ask my parents to bring the installation CDs (legal or nae), but that's in about a month and I have things to do! And I can;t watch things to listen to my music :(

Sigh. Keep your fingers crossed or Larry. Maybe he'll eel better in the morning when I put him away. Night!

Gak, late reply much? :?

I'm sorry to say I don't know what you mean by OS, Lady V. But it doesn't really matter, Larry's got his lungs back! I think it was a DVD burner programme I was using...the trouble began after the first time I used it (failing due to a writing error), and when I tried again having left it a few days the laptop made a noise all of a sudden!

But thank you anyway :D

Well just for the record, OS stands for Operating System, i.e. what version of windows you're running (I dont know what godforsaken program those crazy Apple users have as an OS, so I'll just use windows as the example  ). I'm guessing that Larrys sitting in happy old XP land (based on the anti-Vista sentiment) :D

On the whole faithful laptop thing, I've got an old Dell laptop I have owned since high school (who has since moved on to retire at my family's holiday house on the south coast) that is still going strong. The only thing that went wrong with it is the power supply was fried somewhere along the line, but since I bought a replacement its still kicking on nicely. I love that little Dell :D
It's ok sir. I'll be fine...

Just listen to your commander, bonebrain!

Yes dear...
