All I can say is practice, really. I'm trying to work on drawing mechs as well. You could do what I do and draw out like a normal human body first then add the armor and stuff.

Mechs as you call them, are very similar to "male" anatomy. Rather boxy with the hips and chest being around the same size often, unlike females who usually have larger hips or a narrow waist. Studying lines of art and using figures to help with anatomy is usually good, or having a ton of reference art.
So I guess just get a folder of men to get a idea of how to draw em', though many women have trouble drawing male characters as they try to make them more feminate.. like 90% of shonen ai or shoujou comics with male characters looking like women with the wrong other bits.

Hm. I just practice a lot with many, many references if it's a character from a show/movie (which is what I normally draw).
If I'm designing my own character, I try to use basic shapes (more squared and right angles for males, more circular and curves for females), and a basic human-like outline for a proportionate skeletal structure.
You could do what I do and draw out like a normal human body first then add the armor and stuff.
I do that as well sometimes, CZ. ^^

Yay! I'm not alone! ^^ I need to find an easier way to draw males/mechs, though.

Like OOP said, I tend to use references. If you're trying to create a transformer, most of the alternative modes have been thought already by Hasbro and whatnot. Just look at what they did for inspiration (i.e.- if your beast mode is a panther, look how they drew Cheetor, Tigatron, Ravage, etc.).

Hm...well, when it comes to body shapes, what I do is draw a rectangle for the chest, and a smaller oblongy-shaped rectangle for the pelvis underneath it. Then I join the corners in an inward curve (as men don't have womanly waists...so I'm told ;P)
...I'm no good at describing what In do, if you still think you need help, Shadow, I could do a step by step thing if you like. Not that I'm an expert or anything

You could look at Nightscream from Beast Machines and draw something similar.
