Hangar's Armada/Energon Singles Tournament: Open!

The entire range of the Transformers Combat Tournament is halfway through, and this week is the beginning of the Armada & Energon Conference Singles Tournament! Next week will give the Round 1 Tag Team match-ups as well as the results of the Armada/Energon Singles' first round. As with all previous tournaments, the rules are simple: the eight match-ups are provided, and you, the membership, get to vote for the winner of each fight. Capsule profiles of each participant are provided, and you pick who'd more realistically win their matches. (Important note: The key word is "realistically". Please be objective and without bias in choosing the winning participants in each match.) A victory in each hypothetical battle can be gained by forcing the opponent to surrender, or rendering them unable to continue after a 15-second down period. Outright destruction is not necessary to win, but a very likely possibility. And yes, it is possible for opponents of the same allegiance to fight each other.

In the event that the outcome of a fight's vote total is a tie, both combatants will be eliminated, allowing a bye for their would-be opponent into the next round. If the tournament final's vote becomes a tie, a re-vote will be opened; there must be a winner.

And now, here are the opening-round match-ups for the Armada & Energon Conference Singles Tournament:

(NOTE: Links are provided as a visual aid in further describing each participating character. However, some of the toy-based profiles may not match the ones here, which were based on their cartoon portrayals.)

Match 1: Rodimus (Energon) vs. Starscream (Energon)

Rodimus (Autobot) – A space-faring hero from Cybertron, dedicated to both the protection and restoration of life all over the galaxy. A steadfast command figure with amazing physical power, intelligence and maneuverability. Transforms into a long-nosed semi-truck equipped with a rear-mounted engine for additional speed. Armed with a hand-held Energon cannon in both modes, and is a master strategist. Has few known physical weaknesses.

http://www.tfu.info/2004/Autobot/Rodimus/rodimus.htm

Starscream (Decepticon) – Reborn from his destruction during the Armada era’s Unicron Battles, has now become a mysterious, almost ghost-like figure (though with a solid body). Is believed to be the fastest flyer among the Decepticons in his jet mode (which resembles an F-22 Raptor), and is capable of short-range teleportation to confuse his targets. Equipped with dual missile launchers in both modes, as well as an Energon sword and a hand rifle in robot mode. Is still learning to harness the full potential of his power, and may be psychologically undone by his newfound abnormality.

Match 2: Ironhide (Energon) vs. Scorponok (Energon)

Ironhide (Autobot) – A young but powerful rookie with developing combat skills. While inexperienced, has great potential as a warrior. Transforms into an armored 4-wheel-drive truck which can traverse most rugged terrain. Armed with a roof-mounted assembly (which becomes shoulder-mounted in robot mode) containing a laser cannon, a missile launcher, a scanner and a triple light beacon. Has great strength, endurance and firepower, but is unseasoned and not well-disciplined.

http://www.tfu.info/2004/Autobot/Ironhide/ironhide.htm

Scorponok (Decepticon) – Incredibly powerful and highly ambitious, with great power and sometimes questionable allegiance. An intelligent commander with Triple Changer capability and a varied array of firepower and assault tactics at his disposal. Is capable of flight in jet mode at better-than-average speeds, armed with dual laser cannons on both his roof canopy and his nosecone; plus side-mounted missile launchers. Scorpion-based construction vehicle is heavily armored, equipped with crushing pincer claws bearing hidden missile launchers, roof-mounted laser cannons, and an Energon stinger in his tail. Has immense strength in robot mode; uses the same weaponry from his “scorpion-truck” mode, but has better maneuverability.

http://www.tfu.info/2004/Decepticon/Sco ... rponok.htm

Match 3: Bulkhead (Energon) vs. Shockblast (Energon)

Bulkhead (Autobot) – An eccentric veteran of the Autobot-Decepticon wars who’s seen it all and then some. Physical abilities have been affected little by age; Apache-like helicopter mode uses a pair of dual rocket launchers. With an additional weaponry module, firepower increases dramatically with two more missile launchers and a pair of massive Energon cannons. Robot mode uses hip-mounted rocket launchers and a hand-held rotary blade; weaponry module can become a re-inforced two-legged assault drone, which can also link up to Bulkhead’s back and provide massive arm-like cannons with claw-like pincers. While physically powerful and very experienced, age can sometimes affect his judgment.

http://www.tfu.info/2004/Autobot/Bulkhead/bulkhead.htm

Shockblast (Decepticon) – One of the wildest and most vicious hardened criminals the Decepticons have ever had. Rebellious and almost uncontrollable; a Triple Changer with a hair-trigger temper that enhances his already intimidating physical power. Ground-vehicle mode is a maser cannon tank with a massive and penetrating long-range particle blaster cannon as primary weapon; has an additional roof-mounted dual laser cannon. Orbital weapons satellite mode also uses the cannon, plus signal jammers that scramble a target’s detection systems. Robot mode has incredible strength, and visual and auditory perception; has particle cannon as left arm. Capable of elaborate strategy, but tends to eschew this talent for a berserker approach, which may leave him vulnerable to cooler-headed counterattack.

http://www.tfu.info/2004/Decepticon/Sho ... kblast.htm

Match 4: Red Alert (Armada) vs. Demolisher (Armada)

Red Alert (Autobot) – Veteran soldier, doctor and medic; prefers to preserve and salvage life, but a courageous warrior with unexpected combat skill. A highly intelligent strategist with an almost unflappable attitude under heavy pressure. Transforms into a rescue SUV with great maneuverability over the roughest terrain. Robot mode has great strength and good maneuverability and dexterity; left arm’s wrist socket is capable of using a laser surgery tool and a blaster gun. Partnered with the Mini-Con Longarm (who transforms from miniature crane truck to robot), which unlocks a detachable missile launcher (shoulder-mounted or hand-held), and a hidden chest-mounted stun disc launcher. Incredible skilled and talented, but may sometimes be reluctant to threaten a life during combat, leaving him open to attack.

http://www.tfu.info/2002/Autobot/RedAlert/redalert.htm

Demolisher (Decepticon) – A direct and brutal grunt soldier with great physical power and not much subtlety. Unswervingly loyal to his leader Megatron, and a powerful fighter. Heavily-armored tank mode is resistant to most damage, and bristling with four long-range missile launchers and two multi-chambered gun pods. Uses the same weaponry in robot mode, with gun pods becoming his hands. Partnered with the Mini-Con Blackout (who transforms from mobile missile platform with radar scope to robot) which enhances Demolisher’s firepower and accuracy. While a dangerous warrior, can be outsmarted fairly easily.

http://www.tfu.info/2002/Decepticon/Dem ... lishor.htm

Match 5: Optimus Prime (Energon) vs. Mirage (Energon)

Optimus Prime (Autobot) – The heroic Autobot Leader has undergone an upgrade of his own, with a reconfigured trailer and four Battle Drones for reinforcements. Is still one of the most powerful and wisest of the Autobots, and a long-time hero and idealistic champion of peace. Transforms into a heavily-armored tractor trailer; trailer transforms into a command base with a signal tracking system and four bays that store and launch the Battle Drones (fire truck, helicopter, drill tank, submarine). Standard robot mode uses a hand-held missile launcher as primary weapon. Can combine with the four Battle Drones (each one becoming an extended arm or leg) to form a more powerful Super Mode; any Drone can become any of the limbs, depending on need.

http://www.tfu.info/2004/Autobot/Optimu ... sprime.htm

Mirage (Decepticon) – Formerly known as Tidal Wave, still possesses a mobile armory of firepower in a smaller, faster, more agile body. A menace to both the skies and the seas. Transforms into a streamlined gunboat with the uncanny ability to fly; can reach very high speeds. Still retains vast strength in robot mode despite smaller body; has gained a greater degree of agility and maneuverability, and lower Energon consumption for longer stamina. Uses four missile launchers that can double as energy pulse blasters in both modes. Somewhat more intelligent than before, but not by much.

http://www.tfu.info/2004/Decepticon/Mirage/mirage.htm

Match 6: Scavenger (Armada) vs. Cyclonus (Armada)

Scavenger (Autobot) – Among the oldest, strongest and toughest of the Autobots, with a very serious demeanor and little tolerance for weakness or poor discipline. Skilled in almost all forms of combat; believed to be the best hand-to-hand fighter of the Armada-era Transformers, and once trained Optimus Prime in the past. Transforms into a large bulldozer which can exert immense force upon impact; caterpillar treads can crush targets underneath him. Has incredibly thick armor plating that allows him to weather most artillery and energy weapons fire with little damage to himself. Partnered with Minicon Rollbar (who transforms from dune buggy to robot), which unlocks a hidden hip-mounted energy blaster. Lacks weapons without the assistance of Rollbar, but his armor and fighting skill compensate for it.

http://www.tfu.info/2002/Autobot/ArmSca ... venger.htm

Cyclonus (Decepticon) – A wild and unfocused aerial shock trooper bristling with weaponry. Uses a savage and wild approach to battle with great strength and excellent speed. Transforms into a helicopter gunship armed with a pair of missile launchers; capable of VTOL capabilities and surprisingly good control in flight. Can fly in robot mode using his helicopter rotors. Paired with Minicon Crumplezone (who transforms from tank to robot), which can unlock a pair of blaster guns in both his robot and copter modes; can also extend the helicopter’s nosecone and provide yet another gun. Berzerker-combat style can be countered by a sensible counterattack, since he rarely thinks before he attacks.

http://www.tfu.info/2002/Decepticon/Cyc ... clonus.htm

Match 7: Jetfire (Armada) vs. Megatron (Energon)

Jetfire (Autobot) – A professional officer and an aerial daredevil all in one. Brash, outspoken and confident, but always gets down to business with his various talents. Enormously strong and intelligent; a master strategist and tactician who can devise the best course of action by observing the skills and attitude of another individual. Transforms into a galactic shuttlecraft capable of blazing speeds, dizzying maneuverability, and interstellar travel; armed with pulse cannons. Robot mode uses a deflector shield and a huge hand-held laser cannon. Paired with the Minicon Comettor (who transforms from moon rover to robot) that can boost the destructive power of his cannon. Extreme self-confidence, while not arrogance, can lead him into situations in which he’s overmatched; stocky build in robot mode enhances strength, but limits his agility.

http://www.tfu.info/2003/Autobot/Jetfire/jetfire.htm

Megatron (Decepticon) – His original body disappeared during the Unicron Battles war, but has broken free in a newer and far more powerful body. Fueled by overwhelming power, intelligence and all-around skill; has an even more frightening thirst for domination. Transforms into a space-faring gunship with wing-mounted blasters, dual lasers, and a pair of front-mounted Energon cannons; wing design can switch between normal and X-wing-shaped “Hyper Power” modes (the latter reveals even more offensive weaponry). Is among the strongest and most merciless fighters in robot mode, resistant to most forms of damage; uses two shoulder-mounted cannons, and an arm-mounted tank-drone cannon with a retractable sword. Arrogance and belief of near-invulnerability can be his downfall.

http://www.tfu.info/2004/Decepticon/Meg ... gatron.htm

Match 8: Hot Shot (Armada) vs. Wheeljack (Armada)

Hot Shot (Autobot) – Young, enthusiastic fighter willing to take the most dangerous risks to prove his mettle. All “go” and not much “stop and think”, but courage and enthusiasm are unquestioned. Uses a double-barreled handgun in robot mode and uses a flip-down targeting visor. Prides himself on being one of the fastest of the Autobots; transforms into a super-charged race car. Paired with the Minicon Jolt (who transforms from helicopter to robot), which boosts Hot Shot’s car-mode speed, gives limited flight ability, and unlocks a pair of front-grill-mounted claw cutters. When linked to Jolt in robot mode, firepower is boosted with an overhead missile launcher. Is extremely reckless, not often thinking about consequences before or while he acts.

http://www.tfu.info/2002/Autobot/HotShot/hotshot.htm

Wheeljack (Decepticon) – Formerly a promising Autobot soldier, now a bitter Decepticon menace. Once was a best friend of Hot Shot’s, until a perceived abandonment during a battle led him to switch; wears a gashed-out Autobot symbol along with his Decepticon badge on his chest. Very strong in proportion to his average size; armed with a pair of energy batons for melee combat, which can double as primitive blasters. Transformers into a sleek, streamlined race car that can reach great speeds and travels long distances at a time. Paired with the Minicon Windsheer (who transforms from stealth jet to robot), which unlocks a gliding apparatus to his car mode. A highly intelligent and focused warrior, but consumed by his hatred of the Autobots, and especially of Hot Shot. “Scar metal” in his gash could be a weak point in his armor.

To cast your vote for the winners in each fight, you can e-mail me at excellence-execution@excite.com, reply right here in this thread, or even let me know in a Chat or IM. In the rare moment that we might talk in person or on the phone, casted votes also count there. As usual, you cannot cast your vote for the same match(es) more than once (yeah, an anti-ballot box-stuffing measure).

Voting for this round will be open, until the deadline of Saturday, March 11, at 7pm Pacific Daylight Time. Next week, the results will be posted, along with the opening-round matches for the Armada & Energon Conference Tag Team Tournament.

The first round of the Armada/Energon Singles Tournament is over, resulting is a variety of results, close and lopsided, from all five boards: The Underground Hangar, Beast Wars International, Autobot.Net, Ages Three & Up, and the Transformers Collectors’ Club. And now, here are the results:

Match 1: Rodimus (Energon) vs. Starscream (Energon)

No doubt about it, the first match was already the closest fight in the first round. Support for both combatants were equally great and vocal; some felt the there was a reason Rodimus had become a legendary Cybertronian hero, while others had believed that Starscream’s new form had enough tricks to stymie his Autobot opponent to pick up the win. Starscream did in fact gain the early advantage, but Rodimus was able to battle back to regain the lead. More votes came in for Starscream late in the running, until the time ran out… leading to a 50-50 draw. As a result, both Rodimus and Starscream are eliminated from the Tournament.

WINNER: none

Match 2: Ironhide (Energon) vs. Scorponok (Energon)

This match, however, was nowhere as close, as many suspected. This match pitted two combatants who really did have a running rivalry in the Energon cartoon, something that doesn’t normally happen in the early matches of the Tournament, except for luck of the random draw. Sadly, for the young, spunky Ironhide, his opponent didn’t have an ounce of mercy and thoroughly dominated this match. Scorponok not only took a shutout win against Ironhide, but because he would have faced the winner of the Rodimus-Starscream match, he advances directly into the Semi-Finals!

WINNER: Scorponok

Match 3: Bulkhead (Energon) vs. Shockblast

This match also seemed to be in danger of resulting in another 50-50 draw, but the last few hours finally saw one participant to eke out the needed edge to barely win. It was cheerful, optimistic experience against brutal, hair-trigger violence, and the upbeat attitude won out, with Bulkhead claiming 60% of the vote. “He was fairly consistently shown in the cartoon as being able to not only fight off Shockblast,” wrote Names Are Unimportant of The Underground Hangar, “but do so seemingly easily, as he was able to laugh and talk during all of it.”

WINNER: Bulkhead

Match 4: Red Alert (Armada) vs. Demolisher (Armada)

Another one-sided battle between original cast members of the Armada series, and yet another classic brains-vs.-brawn battle. In the end, the brains won out as Red Alert overwhelmed Demolisher and won with 80%, though Red Alert is no slouch in the strength department, either.

WINNER: Red Alert

Match 5: Optimus Prime (Energon) vs. Mirage (Energon)

With Optimus Prime, chances are usually high that any opponent facing him would lose. And it happened big time here again; Mirage didn’t stand a chance and was sunk by Prime’s assault, as the Autobot Leader advances with a 90% margin.

WINNER: Optimus Prime

Match 6: Scavenger (Armada) vs. Cyclonus (Armada)

What could have been a really good battle led to yet another lopsided victory, as Scavenger put his combination of intelligence, experience, physical power and dedication to propel himself to a destructive 80% victory over Cyclonus. As he advances into the next round, he will face the Autobot whom he first trained to fight; Optimus Prime himself!

WINNER: Scavenger

Match 7: Jetfire (Armada) vs. Megatron (Energon)

In reality, this would have been a much closer contest, as many of you said it would be. As the only first-round match that pitted an Armada character against an Energon character, it could have made it more intriguing. Unfortunately, the results turned out to be nowhere near the case; despite Jetfire’s awesome power, speed and aerial attributes, it wasn’t enough. “Ooo... this is a tough call... Jetfire with Mini-Con-powered cannon, or the G1 Galvie-impersonating Energon Megs?” wrote Stelartron of both The Underground Hangar and Beast Wars International. “Ultimately, though, Megs'd probly win. Yes, he might be arrogant, but most of the time, he has the necessary muscle to back it up.” Megatron shot Jetfire down with 90% of the vote.

WINNER: Megatron

Match 8: Hot Shot (Armada) vs. Wheeljack (Armada)

This was one of the more vicious rivalries to actually air in the Armada cartoon, and believed to be THE grudge match of the Tournament; the young Autobot firebrand facing his old former friend-turned-enemy after a long-time pursuit. Not surprisingly, it was very close, and while something had to give in this brutal contest – which also seemed to be in danger of yet another 50-50 tie – something did. “Unabandoned revenge is a frighteningly powerful thing,” wrote Starseeker of The Underground Hangar, “especially against a young upstart who would probably believe something of their friendship was still intact.” With 60% of the result, Wheeljack now moves on to face the very same one (in a new body) who recruited him into the Decepticons in the first place: Megatron!

WINNER: Wheeljack

This week, we begin the second round of the Armada/Energon Singles Tournament! The opening round resulted in a truckload of one-sided blowouts, while this new round looks to possibly have a good range of results. Normally, there would be four second-round matches, but a bye for one of the competitors had led this round to having three matches to vote for... all three of which are Armada-versus-Energon, and all three of which feature opponents of the same allegiance!

With Scorponok already in the Semi-Finals, he waits on the sidelines to face the winner of a match between two Autobots who have never appeared in the same series together; the long-time veteran Bulkhead versus the warrior-medic Red Alert. The next match features Optimus Prime in his Energon body, facing the Armada Autobot who first trained him to fight: Scavenger! Can the Autobot Leader show his former mentor his mastery of combat since upgrading to his new body... or will the old adage of "not teaching everything I know" put the match in Scavenger's favor? The last of the Round-2 matches features Decepticon Leader Megatron in his Energon body, going up against the former Autobot whom he himself recruited into his own army, Wheeljack! Will Megatron defeat Wheeljack with the same ferocity as he would against any other Autobot; or can Wheeljack channel his bitterness and rage to a victory over his benefactor?

As before, cast your winners' votes as to which participant in each match is more realistically likely to (a) force a surrender, or (b) render them unable to continue after a 15-second down period (destruction is possible, but not necessary). (Important note: The key word is "realistically". Please be objective and without bias in choosing the winning participants in the match. No draws or ties are allowed; you MUST pick a winner.) And as evidenced in this round's matches, it is possible for opponents of the same allegiance to fight each other.

In the event that the outcome of a fight's vote total is a tie, both combatants will be eliminated, allowing a bye for their would-be opponent into the next round. If the tournament final's vote becomes a tie, a re-vote will be opened; there must be a championship winner.

Match 9: no match: Scorponok advances into the Semi-Finals

Match 10: Bulkhead (Energon) vs. Red Alert (Armada)

Match 11: Optimus Prime (Energon) vs. Scavenger (Armada)

Match 12: Megatron (Energon) vs. Wheeljack (Armada)

The Round 2 matches of the Armada-&-Energon Conference Singles Tournament is over... and not a single match was even close. In fact, making things even scarier was that every single match (besides Scorponok's bye in this round) was exactly the same; all matches ended in a 91% result for the winners! So let's go see our winners in this round....

Match 9: Scorponok (Energon) vs. no opponent

Because of the lack of an opponent, Scorponok has a bye in Round 2, and advances directly into the Semi-Finals.

WINNER: Scorponok

Match 10: Bulkhead (Energon) vs. Red Alert (Armada)

This was seen as an easy win for Bulkhead, largely regarding not only his experience (despite his age), but his military hardware as well. Names Are Unimporatant of The Underground Hangar commented in rather full detail: "Though Red Alert has the Minicon advantage, Bulkhead has: a) flight and speed, b) years more experience, c) a brute mode, d) an independent combat drone if he's not using brute mode, e) firepower out the wazoo, and f) better dance skills." ('Syder's Note: Allow me to insert a "Say WHAT?!" ) "So while Red might get in some good shots, this one goes to the crazy old coot."

WINNER: Bulkhead

Match 11: Optimus Prime (Energon) vs. Scavenger (Armada)

As Darth Vader once said to Obi-Wan Kenobi, once he was the learner; then, he became the master. Comments by MasterOfPuppets on the Ages 3 & Up forums: "Scavenger may have trained a younger Prime but with more experience and a SUPAH MODE!!!! it's hard to be defeated."

WINNER: Optimus Prime

Match 12: Megatron (Energon) vs. Wheeljack (Armada)

Have your parents ever told you, "I brought you into this world... and I can take you out of it!"? You may recall how, in the Armada cartoon, Megatron was the one who recruited Wheeljack into the Decepticons. The same principle pretty much happened here, as Stelartron of both The Underground Hangar and Beast Wars International emphatically stated: "Not only can Wheeljack just not compete with him physically, Wheeljack has the added handicap of his semi-hero worship of Megatron holding him back. Poor guy doesn't stand a chance."

WINNER: Megatron

Next week, The Semi-Finals of the Armada-&-Energon Singles Tournament will begin, while the voting for the Armada-&-Energon Tag Team Round-2 matches are underway. And even if you've never played before, you can still join in any time you wish! 8)

This week, we have come down to the Final Four, just as March Madness -- well, for this Tournament, anyway -- is over. And it looks as if it will be an all-Energon affair, as this week will decide who will be the last two Transformers to duke it out for the Armada & Energon Conference Singles Championship.

In the first Semi-Final match, it's the Decepticon and Terrorcon Commander Scorponok, one of the most powerful of all fighters. But the Triple Changer better stay on his guard, because his opponent is the Autobot warrior Bulkhead; a long-time veteran with major re-inforcements. In the other Semi-Final match, it's Leader-versus-Leader, as long-time nemeses Optimus Prime and Megatron clash in a battle that carries on the tradition from their G1 namesakes all the way to today!

As usual, cast your winners' votes as to which participant in each match is more realistically likely to (a) force a surrender, or (b) render them unable to continue after a 15-second down period (destruction is possible, but not necessary). (Important note: The key word is "realistically". Please be objective and without bias in choosing the winners in these matches. No draws or ties are allowed; you MUST pick a winner.) And as has happened in the past, it is possible for opponents of the same allegiance to fight each other.

In the event that the outcome of a fight's vote total is a tie, both combatants will be eliminated, allowing a bye for their would-be opponent into the next round. If the tournament final's vote becomes a tie, a re-vote will be opened; there must be a championship winner. There is also a chance that, if one of the Semi-Final matches ends in a draw, the winner of the other Semi-Final match will automatically win the Championship.

Match 13: Scorponok. Bulkhead may have firepower, but he's a bit of a crazy old coot. Scorponok is a pretty good warrior.

Match 14: Optimus Prime. Again, the combination factor is what makes the difference.
