I personally can't understand male robots. That doesn't make sense to me. I'm not looking to pick a fight but why should they all be males or at least male looking?
Like Nurann said, not male, more neuter in gender. What we perceive as a traditionally "male" physique just works better for transformations. Transformers with female proportions are harder to pull off. (See: Thunderblast, BW Airazor, BW & TM2 Blackarachnia, etc.) Plus except for the Beast Era they've been much larger than humans, so deeper voices make more sense.
The only Transformer I'd consider actually, really male would be Movie Devastator.
Also, BM Nightscream was changed to a male for sales purposes. For a TF show, BM already had an abnormally large proportion of females anyways (I mean, three, man! THREE!!!).
And another TF that was changed to male was Animated Ratchet, who was originally going to be the female Red Alert. (Of course, they let her appear later in a guest cameo in Season 3.)
I also consider Heinrad a male too *looks at his tanuki-trait* O.O
I also read that originally Nightscream would be like Newt from Aliens, but was changed when the importnat people didn't like the idea, so they went with making him like John Conner from Terminator 2 (hence the hair thingie lol)
Hm.. I wouldn't exactly call Heinrad a Mary sue type. He wasn't exactly a Spotlight character which was more of Break, Stampy, and Corada's thing. His time abilitys were neat, but way weaker in the tv show compared to the manga as a servent of the god of time and even bringing Big Convoy back from the dead as a normal mammoth to retire..
Now Big Convoy could be Mary sue like..He rarely lost a battle and even killed Unicron with that crazy gun of his..
And yes, considering his figure has testicles, he's a very male transformer due Asian myths and quirkiness. While Devastator was just because Michael Bay likes making inappropriate jokes.. I guess to fill in for the Inappropriate music from the Transformers movie back in 86.
Then ofcourse there's Dinobot's image which I don't think I need to get into..
Dinobot's image? What the one where he got hit in the coils? XD
But we're getting off topic here and i have no idea who this Heinrad is anyway.

i think he means the picture of Dinobot where he is well..um endowed...
Heinrad is a Beast wars Neo character who turns into a Tanuki with a clock in his tummy/chest (depending on mode) He has time control abilities, and I loves him!!!!! lol

....Count the bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums
*throws up a red flag for off-topic-ness and horrible mental images*
While I am horribly tempted to make bad ball pun right now, I'll just skip to reminding you guys this topic is about femmes in TF. Save Heinrad's and DB's abilities to produce children for another day, please.
Having a female voice actor would be a good start. Other than that, there's really nothing else besides self-proclaimed gender that can classify a transformer as male or female. I hate it when people like to imagine femmes as bots with little armor, lithe forms, exposed "skin", and a feminine personality. It's like they're trying to detract the awesomeness of characters like Airazor and Strika.
hehehe Airazor was actually my first favorite female transformer. I didn't really like Blackarachnia at first. She kind of annoyed me.
Yeah Airazor doesn't exactly look female... but she does have curves... around her waist.

In TF Cybertron (was it?) one of the Autobot cars was said to be a female, yet in the original Japanese version it was a male. So AR is not the only masculine (enough to be a male japanese) female.
Yeah I never actually watched that show.. Too busy to keep up!
